A cushion for the costs insurance doesn't pay.

Hospital Indemnity

Hospital indemnity plans pay a fixed cash amount when you are admitted, regardless of what your main plan pays. You decide what the money is used for.

What to understand

  • Daily benefits

A set amount per day of admission, up to a maximum number of days.

  • Paid to you

Benefits go to you, not the hospital, and can cover any expense you choose.

  • Optional riders

Ambulance, observation stays, skilled nursing and outpatient surgery riders are often available.

  • Not medical insurance

These plans supplement medical coverage; they don't replace it.

Questions worth asking

  • What are my plan's hospital copays per day?
  • How many days of benefit would realistically be enough?
  • Are there pre-existing condition limitations?
  • Which riders are worth the extra premium?
